چکیده
ABSTRACT: We described a case of rhinitis caused by Exserohilum rostratum in 3-year-old, mixed breed, afemale goat, presenting with decreased appetite, dyspnea, and face deformity, evolution approximately 2 months. Necropsy revealed an extensive brownish yellow, irregular, ulcerated, friable focal lesion the nasal cavity. Purulent secretion drained from lesion, affecting vestibule extending caudal portion dorsal concha, associated meatus obstruction, destruction septum, bone palatine vomer. Histologically, was characterized as pyogranulomatous necrotizing osteomyelitis (multifocal to coalescent, sharp, chronic) myriad fungal structures. Morphologically, hyphae were thin, slightly tortuous, rarely septate walls (2-6 μm diameter), multiple chains individual conidia or groups (8-10 pigmented chlamydoconidia (7.5-15 diameter). They showed positive results for special histochemical techniques such Fontana Masson, methenamine silver nitrate Grocott, periodic acid Schiff. E. identified causative agent using microbiological isolation molecular identification. Pyrogranulomatous goats is unprecedented, being first animals Brazil phaeohyphomycosis goats.

In October 2012, the CDC reported an outbreak of fungal meningitis associated with methylprednisolone injections [1]. Although the index case had Aspergillus fumigatus meningitis [2], subsequent reports indicated that the majority of affected patients had meningitis caused by Exserohilum rostratum, an extremely rare cause of human fungal disease [1,3,4]. The outbreak is presumably the result of...

Exserohilum rostratum is the most common pathogen in the current U.S. outbreak of fungal central nervous system infection, septic arthritis, and localized spinal or paraspinal infections (1). Rapid laboratory diagnosis is urgently needed but is unfortunately still limited. Only 30% of the 372 case patient specimens sent to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) had PCR evidence su...

The outbreak of fungal meningitis associated with contaminated methylprednisolone acetate has thrust the importance of fungal infections into the public consciousness. The predominant pathogen isolated from clinical specimens, Exserohilum rostratum (teleomorph: Setosphaeria rostrata), is a dematiaceous fungus that infects grasses and rarely humans. This outbreak highlights the potential for fun...
